Devils rule the planet of Chainsaw Man. The series’ central idea is that human worries manifest in the form of terrifying, horrifying devils who possess extraordinary abilities in this realm. They can be exiled from this dimension, but in Hell, they will rise again. The presence of devils has led to the emergence of devil hunters—people who hunt devils for a living.

 The Governmental Safety Council, a bureau of devil hunters employed by the government, is the highest point of this occupation. Some of them even have agreements in place with the Devils for terrible expenses. The Commission also uses fiends, which are devils that have possessed a dead person, and hybrid cars, which are created when a devil fuses with a human through agreement or surgery. 

Denji, whose real name wasn’t ever given in the series, is the lead character of Chainsaw Man. Denji is surrounded by Aki Hayakawa and Power, two deuteragonists and a tritagonist, as is traditional for the Shonen series. Power is a fiend, while Aki is a demon hunter. They both work for the 4th division of the Security Commission and are supervised by Makima, the division’s chief, whose surname is also missing.

This series coated in blood, guts, death, and brutality, has several violent and sexually explicit scenes. Self-harm is mentioned and seen, albeit in a far different setting than a psychological one. Nearly all characters exhibit a broad disregard for their safety. This may occasionally have suicidal tendencies.

It makes no judgments, never assigns blame, and never offers a fix.

Chainsaw Man emerges with the three characters meeting and then follows their exploits while working as Devil Hunters. The series never permits the reader or viewer to hope for even the slightest hint of a happy conclusion for any of its protagonists, and these experiences are the material of nightmares.
